Maternal Venezuelan Ancestry and Anesthesia:
Risk, screening, and management of the MT-ND4 variant in 2026

December 12, 2026 | 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM PT

About

Description

Emerging genetic information continues to shape how anesthesiologists assess risk and plan perioperative care. This webinar will explore the MT-ND4 m.11232T>C variant associated with maternal Venezuelan ancestry and its potential implications for patients undergoing anesthesia.

Attendees will examine the spectrum of clinical presentations following sevoflurane exposure in patients carrying the variant, including delayed emergence, metabolic derangements, and neurologic sequelae. The presentation will also address when preoperative screening may be appropriate, clinical and family-history considerations, ethical considerations surrounding genetic screening, and available testing options and their limitations.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the spectrum of clinical presentations after sevoflurane exposure in patients carrying the MT-ND4 m.11232T>C variant, including delayed emergence, metabolic derangements, and neurologic sequelae.
  2. Explain the rationale for preoperative screening for the MT-ND4 m.11232T>C variant and identify the clinical and family-history features that should prompt it.  Understand ethical considerations surrounding ND4 variant screening.
  3. Formulate an intraoperative and postoperative plan that minimizes risk in patients known or suspected to carry the ND4 variant.
  4. Select an appropriate genetic test for the MT-ND4 m.11232T>C variant and understand its limitations.
